Why the British Hindus Matter in the UK

 


Figures according to the office for national statistics- 2018 Census, there are around 9,91,494 who identify themselves as Hindus in the United Kingdom. This accounts for around 2% of the total population of the UK. This demographics of this population includes people born abroad who are now residing or naturalised here, and those who are now born in the UK – in some families, this could be the third or even the fourth generation.

According to ONS, there are around 9, 63,153 Hindus in England, 7,794 in Wales and 20,547 in Scotland.  Prior calculations in 2001 there were 5, 58, 810 Hindus in the U.K and in 2011 there were 8,35,394 Hindus which is 49.5% increase and in 2018 there are around 9,91,494 which is 18.7% increase since 2011. The highest number of Hindus lives in London which is 4,71,836. After Christians, no other religion, Muslims, Hindus are the fourth highest religion group in the U.K followed by Sikh, Jewish, and Buddhist.
